Stress Management
The Purpose of Yoga- Yogic Walking for Anxiety.
Saturday, June 30, 2007, 10:45 PM - Yoga
Let’s look at more solutions, which Yoga can give you, for anxiety and stress management. All of these solutions will take a bit of practice, and in some cases, you may need the guidance of a competent Yoga teacher.

After Pranayama (Yogic breathing techniques), there are still a large number of techniques to choose from. The next one that comes to mind is Asana (Yoga Posture). In a typical Hatha Yoga class, you will learn Asana on a mat, but you can learn to practice good posture all day long.

You can practice good posture in a chair, when eating a meal, standing, and walking. You can even use pillows to sleep in good posture. Most people prefer to multi-task these days, so Yogic walking is a wonderful way for those of us, who just have to do many things at once. This is not to be confused with walking meditation, which is an entirely different technique.

Put on good walking shoes, comfortable clothes, and begin to walk your course. Always watch the road, but keep your spine straight, and your gaze should be at eye level, while you visually take in the world around you. Close your mouth and breathe only through the nose. Breathe naturally, and do not force your inhales or exhales.

As you continue to walk, maintain your personal pace, and be mindful of your posture. The recommended time for Yogic walking is, at least, 20 minutes. Once breathing is natural, and not strained, some practitioners of this method practice walking meditation or silent Japa (Prayers).

This is a complete mental, physical, and spiritual practice, but you must pick a safe course and be ready to react to traffic, animals, and other pedestrians. Just because you meditate, or practice Japa, is not a reason to ignore people who wave or say hello.

Some people carry dog snacks for dogs and squirrels - while others may stop and chat to friends in the park. To accept life, people, animals, and the changes around us, without judging everything, is a treasure of life. If you can avoid judging everything, while you go for your walks, your health will change for the best in a multitude of ways.

Yogic walking is good aerobic exercise and prevents many diseases, anxiety, and depression. Your heart, vital organs, bones, joints, connective tissue, and muscles will benefit from Yogic walking. You may control, or lose weight, by practicing Yogic walking.

Maybe you were only looking to reduce your anxiety levels, but you are now convinced that Yogic walking is the way to go. Talk to your physician and get advice, which is specific to your body. Choose your course wisely and have fun.

Creating Sacred Space: Connecting To The Soul With Yoga
Tuesday, February 27, 2007, 06:54 PM - Yoga
When you feel good, are in the moment and are creating your life as you want it, you're in sacred space. Joseph Campbell defines sacred space as any place where you're hermetically sealed off from the world. This can be a room, or an activity, or just a state of mind. But the idea is that when you're in sacred space, whatever you're doing becomes a meditation. Your actions are coming from your soul, your mind is neutral and open and so it projects perfectly the light within you and you feel good. Time seems to fall away and you feel charged. This is sacred space and it's a metaphor for the soul. The soul is sacred space. Campbell says that whenever he would have to travel, he preferred a standard, no-frills room. As soon as he took his books out and put them on the table, the place became his-- a metaphor for his sacred space.More...

Yoga is such a way to create sacred space. You stop the mind with yoga and when you sit in meditation, the soul's influx creates a feeling of wellbeing. In this way you've sealed yourself off from the world for however long-- 5 minutes, 90 minutes or half a day. Anything done with focused attention is a meditation. If fishing is what you do to get in the middle and make the world out there fall away, then that's your meditation. Anything that you do that puts you into flow is a meditation. So you don't have to do yoga. I always tell people, yoga works for me but there are many rivers that flow into the ocean. If you've got a way of creating sacred space for yourself and your life works, God Bless, that's the whole point as far as I'm concerned.

If you're not enjoying what you're doing, you should examine that. Many people, myself included, have been at a period in life when everything seems a struggle and a chore. If you're not careful, you can adopt a philosophy that, it's just the way life is. That's simply not so. It all starts with finding a sacred space where you can seal yourself off from the world for a period of time so that you can use your imagination to create a new picture. If you make this a regular practice, the ability to focus your imagination on the experiences you want to have will become very strong and you will create the habit of conscious creation. The big catch is you actually have to do it!

If you can't find any way to get into your center, then yoga is one great way to go. Many if not all of us are in our heads a lot these days. It's a sign of the times-- computers have allowed everything to move so fast that people rarely slow down until they're completely exhausted or worse, they've gotten sick and then they just absolutely have to rest. Sacred space and creating a meditative flow is more important now than ever before. People need a way to plug in and recharge quickly so they can keep going.

As a writer it's very important for me to create sacred space in order to write. As soon as I think about who's going to see this and who's going to buy it or what the outside world will do with it, I'm finished. You really have to set yourself up in life with some apparatus for creating sacred space. It's only from that anchor, that core center still point, that you can begin to see exactly what you want to be-- what you want to create. It all comes from that still point within.

It's only from up on the bridge, at the helm, where all the controls are that you can truly gain the perspective to steer the ship.

Understanding the Types of Yoga.
Tuesday, February 13, 2007, 02:54 PM - Yoga
If you are looking to add yoga to your healthy lifestyle you may be wondering what type to choose. We are here to break down the many styles of yoga and help you decide which path is best for you. Below is a brief overview of the most popular yoga practices today.

Vinyasa - Movements and breaths are coordinated in a fast pace type of yoga. Each asana (pose) is balanced with a counter pose to create a harmonized mind and body. Vinyasa yoga has influenced many other styles of yoga that all keep the idea of balance and synchronicity throughout.

Ashtanga - This is a type of Vinyasa yoga that follows a series of asanas that constantly flow, allowing each movement to receive a breath. Ashtanga is a Sanskrit (an ancient language in India) work meaning "8 Limbs". Ashtanga yoga is sometimes better known as "power yoga" because of the demand on the body.

Iyengar - This a type of yoga designed by the famous yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar. His style of yoga places a great emphasis on proper alignment by encouraging the use of yoga props such as bands, blocks, pillows, etc. while holding each pose for a longer amount of time than most other yoga styles. This style is great for beginners or those who have not exercised in a while because the props help to compensate for any lack of flexibility that comes with continued practice.

Bikram - Otherwise know as "Hot Yoga", this style of Vinyasa yoga is taught in heated rooms of 105 degrees F or warmer. It is meant to duplicate the climate in India where yoga originated. There are 26 specific asanas that are performed in the same order. Bikram yoga follows the belief that the muscles in the body should be warmed up and worked in this order to create the fullest potential of energy in the body. Because of the extreme heat this type of practice is meant for those in extremely fit shape.

Kundalini - This yoga style focuses on the spiritual aspect of yoga; the mind, body, soul connection with the goal of taking the yoga participant to a place beyond just the physical body. The main goal of Kundalini yoga is to activate and balance the seven chakras in the body, the kundalini energy found in the spine. Different parts of the body and brain are awakened by performing breathing, mantras, body locks, meditation, etc. in order to unlock the different layers of consciousness found in every individual. Kundalini yoga is ideal for anyone looking to take their yoga practice beyond the physical attachment.

Hatha - In Sanskrit Ha means "sun" and Tha means "moon". This is a mellow slow paced type of yoga that places great emphasis on using the basic poses to relieve stress in the body and mind. Hatha yoga is perfect for reflecting at the end of the day. It is also ideal for beginners wanting to practice connecting the body with the mind through a gentle series of flow movements and meditative breaths

No matter what type of yoga seems best for you on your computer screen. We encourage you to take part in several styles of yoga classes and open your mind to the relaxing and energizing effects that the amazing practice of yoga offers you. Only after you are able to open and receive can you truly learn what is best for you.
